TDCJ Release and Discharge Paths

A person leaving TDCJ confinement may be discharged, released on parole, placed on mandatory supervision, transferred under another hold, or otherwise remain subject to a separate authority. Parole and mandatory supervision end the prison confinement phase under conditions; they do not erase the sentence. Bell County parole supervision routes through the Temple District Parole Office, while probation is a distinct court and local CSCD process.

No TDCJ-operated prison in Bell County was identified. Facility geography cannot be assumed from a Bell County home address or case. The statewide TDCJ record identifies the institution for a current prisoner.

Confirm a TDCJ Discharge

The TDCJ inmate search lists only people currently incarcerated. Search by exact last name plus first initial, TDCJ number, or SID. Review the location, offenses, projected release date, and parole-review information, but do not treat a projected date or disappearance as proof of release.

1. Search the current-only TDCJ database with the strongest identifier.
2. If there is no current result, send a historical-information request to pia.texas.gov.
3. Ask expressly for prior incarceration and the release or discharge date and status.
4. For parole, use the BPP status line before a vote and the Parole Division release-status line after a favorable vote.
5. Check any named receiving custodian when a detainer or transfer appears.

TDCJ Offender Search Fields

The current search and historical request serve different purposes. Online data are updated on working days and are at least 24 hours old. TDCJ does not publish a released-offender result in the current search.

A favorable parole vote may require a program, future date, or other condition. Use the post-vote status line to confirm the release process.

TDCJ Records and Status

TDCJ provides several channels because each answers a different stage of the release question. The general locator numbers are 936-295-6371 and 800-535-0283. The official telephone page lists weekday service from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. BPP review status is 844-512-0461. After a favorable vote, TDCJ Parole Division release status is 512-406-5202.

Request TDCJ Release Records

When the web episode lacks a destination or has disappeared, request a specifically named record rather than “all records.” Texas Local Schedule PS item PS4200-06 defines the county jail register as a permanent record. It includes the person's identifying and intake information, reason for commitment, and release or transfer date. That makes the register a strong fallback for an old TDCJ booking.

A focused Texas Public Information Act request should identify the person, booking number, and dates, then ask for the jail-register entry and booking/release sheet. Request the actual release date and time, release type, and destination or transfer agency. A booking photograph is a separate item. Ask for electronic copies and a cost estimate before any work that may carry a charge. Bell County's Sheriff public-records instructions and NextRequest portal provide the official route.

Do not ask for unrelated protected identifiers. A permanent register does not mean every supporting jail document is permanent, and an expunction order may change ordinary access rules.

TDCJ Transfer Checks

A completed TDCJ episode may be only the first half of the search. Check the Loop Jail record in the same county booking environment if the location changed. If the destination is TDCJ, use the current TDCJ search to locate an incarcerated person, then request historical release or discharge information from TDCJ after the person leaves that current-only database. A state projected release date is not a county actual release date.

Release

The recorded end of custody by the named agency.

Transfer

A move to another custodian while confinement continues.

Discharge

The end of a correctional status, which may differ from release to supervision.

Detainer

A request from another agency tied to notice or temporary continued holding.

For federal custody, the BOP locator and the Western District of Texas docket answer different questions. No single portal follows a person across all of these systems.

ICE After TDCJ Release

An immigration detainer can create two distinct custody events. Bell County may record the end of its booking while ICE custody begins. ICE describes a detainer as a request for notice and for detention for up to 48 hours beyond the otherwise authorized release time. It is not proof that ICE took custody, so the TDCJ record and the federal immigration record must both be checked.

Use the ICE Online Detainee Locator System with either an A-number and country of birth, or an exact first and last name with country of birth. ODLS covers current detainees and people released from ICE custody during the prior 60 days. A county release date can therefore precede an ICE release date. If ODLS is blank, the short window, spelling, data timing, or a different destination may explain the result.

Note: An ICE detainer signals a possible handoff, but only the receiving system can confirm that ICE custody actually began.

Bell Jail Expansion Context

Bell County’s 2025 recovery plan report said the county jail expansion was nearing fall-2025 completion and included a 54-bed mental-health ward. This is county facility history, not TDCJ history. It cannot prove a named person entered a state institution or left one.

The distinction matters when a Bell County booking ends with transfer to TDCJ. The county record documents the first boundary. The statewide current search can document later TDCJ confinement. After that current result disappears, a historical request must seek the state release or discharge record. The jail expansion report answers none of those person-specific questions.

TDCJ Classification and Records may recalculate a projected date based on time credit, offense rules, parole or mandatory-supervision decisions, detainers, and new cases. Texas does not have a generic rule that every prisoner serves 85 percent of a sentence. Government Code Chapters 498 and 508 contain distinct formulas and exclusions. Those rules explain why forecasts move, but the final state record is still needed to confirm release.

Bell County TDCJ Verification Chain

A Bell County case can produce several records without any one record telling the full TDCJ release story. The county docket may show judgment and commitment. The county jail record may show transfer out of local custody. The current TDCJ search identifies a person still incarcerated by the state. Once that person no longer appears, the search has reached its limit. It does not become a historical discharge archive.

For history, use the TDCJ email information channel. Include the full name and seven-digit TDCJ number. When that number is unknown, follow TDCJ alternate identifier requirements. Ask expressly for prior-incarceration information and the release or discharge date and status. A focused request is needed when the exact historical release event is the purpose.

Telephone channels should match the stage. The general locator answers current-location questions. Before a parole vote, BPP review status is 844-512-0461. A favorable vote may include a future month, required program, or other condition, so it is not proof of physical release. The final timeline should identify four points when applicable: Bell County transfer, TDCJ admission, TDCJ release from confinement, and the start or end of parole supervision. A transfer continues custody. Parole permits release under conditions. Discharge may end the correctional status described in the record. Each conclusion must stay tied to the agency and event that created it. Record the source date and identifier used for every state status check.
